Gerbera flowers are those which are quite beautiful to see and a priced possession in your garden too. They are considered to be a simple statement of happiness. There exist about 200 varieties of gerberas with almost 40 varieties blooming all year round. The most seen colors are white, red, cream, orange, pink, yellow and purple which are produced by hybridization. They are usually seen in Africa across to the Tropical Asia and South America. The Gerbera is associated with purity and strength. This flower with their soft appearance and sweet fragrance are indeed a delightful gift for any occasion.

They grow up to a height of 18 to 24 inch; the flowers may have a diameter ranging from 4 to 10 inch. There will be more than ten leaves in a plant, medium green in color spread out in a circle parallel to the ground. Gerberas plant is perennial flowering and features a large capitulum’s with striking, 2-lipped ray florets. Though the capitulum’s on the Gerberas has the appearance of a single flower, it is actually a cluster of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum’s of the Gerberas.

The biological name of Gerberas is Gerbera Jamesonii. Gerberas, also called Gerbera daisies, belongs to the family of Sunflowers and Daiseys etc. Even some of the species of gerbera have suffix daisy added to them. Gerberas like Gerbera Anandria, Gerbera Aurantiaca and Gerbera Jamesonii are usually known by the name Ghostly Daisy, Hilton Daisy, Barberton Daisy, Gerbera Daisy and Transvaal Daisy. These were first imported to Europe in the 19th century

The Gerbera is the fifth most cut flower. This flower is used widely in the cut flower industry. As they are much attractive in color, Gerberas can be used in landscapes as bedding plants for borders and flower beds or as Cut Flowers for table arrangements. As Gerbera flowers remain open in night too they add beauty to whatever and wherever they are placed. Gerberas are used in various flower arrangements due to its wide range of color available. In the Xmas season the red and white gerberas are used mostly while rose and salmon color gerberas indicate springs arrival. Red shaded gerberas are used even for Valentines Day. Sizzling colors like yellow and orange are used mostly in the summer season. They are used even for various wedding arrangements ranging form the bride’s bouquet to the cake decoration. The only color that the Gerbera is not available in is blue. Orange Gerberas used to be given to non-smokers on May 31st in order to celebrate “No Smoking day”.

Gerbera flowers are of various forms. They can be single, double or duplex, crested doubles and full crested doubles. While single gerbera flowers have a row of non overlapping petals with green centre duplex gerberas have a double row of overlapping petals with green, black or dark red eye. Crested doubles contains two rows of overlapping petals with one or more inner rows of shorter petals with a green, black or dark red eye colour. Full crested gerberas have solid overlapping rows of petals with inner row diminishing in size, covering they eye entirely.

Gerberas can be produced in various ways, the most inexpensive being using the seed available. Artificial growing media is also available to grow gerberas and they need high and full sun light and now a day they are made using tissue culture. Most gerbera daisies are produced in some form of protected structure, for example, in Netherlands, gerbera cut flowers are produced on raised beds in heated greenhouses to protect from severe winter weather.
